A Bit of a Bad Lot

This photo from the Edge House Archives shows the Roberts family in the 1870's.  The two boys are Robert and Elizabeth's sons and the chap on the right is his ne'er do well nephew, who was entrusted to the family's care when they moved to Edge House.  Apparently a charming and well-loved young man he unfortunately had a drink problem.   A billiard room was built on the top lawn to provide him with somewhere to relax without causing embarrassment to the family.  When we had to dismantle it in 1990 we found a cache of beer and cough mixture bottles beneath the wooden floor.
